These directions are intended to help visually impaired and blind people navigate unfamiliar routes unaccompanied. They have been compiled in collaboration with the Swiss Association for the Blind and Visually Impaired, SBV.

Format, starting point and destination
- Direction of travel: Where appropriate, a clockface is used to indicate the direction to walk in; for example: 3 o’clock to turn right, 12 o’clock for straight on, 10 o’clock for slight left.
- Destination: Where you want to get to, such as the name of the ETH building. The address of the building can be used as guidance in navigation apps (such as Google Maps, MyWay Pro, etc.) or other support tools.
- Starting point: The directions begin here.
- Distance in metres: Approximate distance (walking distance, rather than as the crow flies)
- Directions: The directions are as concise as they can be and as accurate as possible, but do not rule out changes arising at short notice such as building sites, shifting of objects/fixtures or changes in ground surfacing.
- Special points: Alerts about potential dangers or special situations
- Telephone info: Contact point if you need help or information on site.
Travel to the ETH Zentrum campus by public transport (tram)
- To make things simple, the starting point for all directions to the ETH Zentrum campus is the tram stop at the main railway station, “Zürich, Bahnhofstrasse/Hauptbahnhof”, tram number 6. If you need help finding this tram stop, one option is to contact the Main Station’s passenger assistance service at external page Zürcher Bahnhofhilfe (German). Please give them plenty of notice.
- For all the directions provided, the destination point for access to all buildings on the ETH Zentrum campus is the tram stop “Zürich, ETH/Universit?tsspital”, at the level of the Main Building (HG).
- Please note: The tram stop for the return journey from all buildings on the ETH Zentrum campus is not located at the same spot where you arrived! For your return journey, use the tram stop “Zürich, ETH/Universit?tsspital” in Tannenstrasse, at the level of Tannenstrasse 5.
- Destination: Main Building (HG), R?mistrasse 101, Zurich
- Starting point: Tram stop “ETH/Universit?tsspital”, tram number 6 (and 9), at the level of the Main Building
- Distance in metres: 80
- Directions: Continue walking in the direction of travel. Find the lowered kerb on the right. Cross R?mistrasse. Keep straight, wide forecourt. Entrance is a little below the street.
- Special points: There are three tram stops in total at “ETH/Universit?tsspital”:
- in the direction of the zoo, in R?mistrasse (downhill),
- in the direction of Irchel, in R?mistrasse (uphill),
- in the direction of the Main Station, in Tannenstrasse (downhill).

- Return journey: Take tram number 6 to the main station “Zürich, Bahnhofstrasse/Hauptbahnhof”. Tram stop “ETH/Universit?tsspital” in Tannenstrasse, at the level of Tannenstrasse 5. Distance 150 metres. As you come out of the main exit, walk straight uphill to R?mistrasse. Turn 90 degrees to the left to Tannenstrasse, lowered kerb at the pedestrian crossing. Cross Tannenstrasse at 11 o’clock to the tram island. Walk down the tram island to the guidance area for boarding the tram, on the left.
- Destination: CAB Building, Universit?tsstrasse 6, Zurich, entrance on the street side
- Starting point: Tram stop “ETH/Universit?tsspital”, tram number 6 (and 9), at the level of the Main Building
- Distance in metres: 180
- Directions: Walk back in the opposite direction of travel, find the lowered kerb on the right, cross R?mistrasse (caution: first two tram tracks, then a central island, then a car lane). Turn 90 degrees to the left, walk along the footpath, gently uphill at first, then a bit steeper. After 150 metres in total, climb the steps to the right, series of several iron gates, a paved forecourt, more steps up to the main entrance.
- Special points: There are three tram stops in total at “ETH/Universit?tsspital”:
- in the direction of the zoo, in R?mistrasse (downhill),
- in the direction of Irchel, in R?mistrasse (uphill),
- in the direction of the Main Station, in Tannenstrasse (downhill).

- Bahnhofstrasse/Hauptbahnhof”. Tram stop “ETH/Universit?tsspital” in Tannenstrasse, at the level of Tannenstrasse 5. Distance 150 metres. Exit Universit?tsstrasse 6. Walk down Universit?tsstrasse on the same side. After 50 metres you reach the first guidance area with tactile paving right across the footpath. Don’t cross the street here, but continue another 40 metres till you reach a second guidance area with tactile paving. Lowered kerb for the pedestrian crossing on the right. Cross Universit?tsstrasse (caution: first a car lane, then a central island, then two tram tracks, followed by another central island with a guidance area, and another car lane). 10 metres to the left find the lowered kerb, take the pedestrian crossing over Tannenstrasse, heading in a 2 o’clock direction. Walk down the tram island to the guidance area for boarding the tram, on the left.
- Destination: CHN Building, Universit?tsstrasse 16, Zurich
- Starting point: Tram stop “ETH/Universit?tsspital”, tram number 6 (and 9), at the level of the Main Building
- Distance in metres: 210
- Directions: Walk back in the opposite direction of travel, find the lowered kerb on the right, cross R?mistrasse (caution: first two tram tracks, then a central island, then a car lane). Turn 90 degrees to the left, walk along the footpath, gently uphill at first, then a bit steeper. After 200 metres in total, the building entrance is at 1 o’clock on the right.

Distance 200 metres. Walk down Universit?tsstrasse on the same side. After 100 metres you reach the first guidance area with tactile paving across the entire footpath. Don’t cross the street here, but continue another 40 metres till you reach a second guidance area with tactile paving. Lowered kerb for the pedestrian crossing on the right. Cross Universit?tsstrasse (caution: first a car lane, then a central island, then two tram tracks, followed by another central island with a guidance area, and another car lane). 10 metres to the left find the lowered kerb, take the pedestrian crossing over Tannenstrasse, heading in a 2 o’clock direction. Walk down the tram island to the guidance area for boarding the tram, on the left.
- Destination: CLA Building, Tannenstrasse 3, Zurich
- Starting point: Tram stop “ETH/Universit?tsspital”, tram number 6 (and 9), at the level of the Main Building
- Distance in metres: 140
- Directions: Walk back in the opposite direction of travel. Find the lowered kerb on the left; cross R?mistrasse. Turn 90 degrees to the right; after 30 metres make a 90 degree turn to the left. Walk down Tannenstrasse for 75 metres. Wide guidance area right across the entire pavement. Cross Tannenstrasse here at the pedestrian crossing. Cycle lane, two tram tracks, one vehicle lane. Another guidance area. Concrete bollards can be felt left and right. After the left-hand bollard, tap three more bollards. From the third bollard, in the direction of 11 o’clock, the main entrance is 7 metres away. Be careful: automatic revolving door (audible).

- Return journey: Take tram number 6 to “Zürich, Bahnhofstrasse/Hauptbahnhof”. Tram stop “ETH/Universit?tsspital” in Tannenstrasse, at the level of Tannenstrasse 5. Distance 40 metres. On exiting the revolving door, walk in a 10 o’clock direction for roughly 10 metres till you come to a large guidance area. This is situated between two concrete bollards (10 in total), each one about 60 centimetres high. Do not cross the street, but follow the double guiding line on the left uphill to cross Clausiusstrasse, where there is not usually much traffic. You come to a large guidance area about 4 metres wide. Turn to the right and cross the road at the pedestrian crossing. Move up the tram island for 5 metres to the guidance area for boarding the tram (tram 6 and 10).
- Destination: ETA building, Gloriastrasse 35, Zürich
- Starting point: For this building, do not get off at the tram stop “Zürich, ETH/Universit?tsspital”, but two stops later at “Zürich, Voltastrasse”, tram number 6 (and 5).
- Distance in metres: 150
- Directions: Walk back in the opposite direction of travel to the bottom end of the tram island. Find the lowered kerb on the right. Cross Gloriastrasse (tram and individual traffic). Make a 90 degree turn to the left and walk down Gloriastrasse; on the right is a line of raised setts in the tarmac. Follow this line for 20 metres to a high column at the end. Walk across the forecourt in the direction of 2 o’clock till you come to a solid concrete step with a high wall left and right. Go up the steps, following the right-hand edge. At the end of the steps, cross a flat area of just over 7 metres; make a 90 degree turn to the right, follow the wall and after roughly 5 metres walk around a large permanent waste bin. Passageway through the building; continue to follow the latticework wall to its end, or the end of the passageway. Inner courtyard with lamps and trees, as well as ventilation grids in the ground. Take a 90 degree turn to the left to the other side of the passageway. From there, follow the building for about 40 metres, then tap to find a raised surface of around 8 centimetres (ramp, side entrance to the ETZ building). From this ramp, walk about 12 metres in a 2 o’clock direction to the main entrance of the ETA building and the Paul Scherrer Auditorium.

- Return journey: Take tram number 6 to “Zürich, Bahnhofstrasse/Hauptbahnhof”. Tram stop Voltastrasse at the level of Gloriastrasse 45. Distance 135 metres. Ask someone to accompany you out of the building. Be careful: there are some individual trees and lamp posts in the inner courtyard, and in the passageway there is a large waste bin on the left edge. Once outside the building, make a 90 degree turn to the left, feel for indentations in the building, about 1 metre in length. At the end of the building, there is a protruding column and a wall around 2 metres long. Walk as straight as you can in a 12 o’clock direction; the floor covering alternates between large stone slabs and small raised setts. Once you reach the sixth area with large stone slabs, you’ll feel a slight dip. Make a 90 degree turn to the right, concrete floor; walk through a high passageway with latticework walls. At the end of the passageway, tap to feel a wall on the left, than make a 90 degree turn to the left after just over 7 metres. Follow the wall and stairs down – there are around 30 steps. At the end of the steps, continue in a 12 o’clock direction across the open forecourt for around 15 metres; there may be some parked cars. At the end of the forecourt, tap till you find a line of double setts raised about 2 centimetres. Follow this line in an 11 o’clock direction to the end of a wall. After just over 1.5 metres, tap to feel the kerb and walk downhill to find the guidance area after about 2 metres (tram 6 and 5).
- Destination: ETZ building, Gloriastrasse 35, Zürich
- Starting point: For this building, do not get off at the tram stop “Zürich, ETH/Universit?tsspital”, but two stops later at “Zürich, Voltastrasse”, tram number 6 (and 5).
- Distance in metres: 90
- Directions: Walk back in the opposite direction of travel to the bottom end of the tram island. Find the lowered kerb on the right. Cross Gloriastrasse (tram and individual traffic). Make a 90 degree turn to the left and walk down Gloriastrasse; on the right is a line of raised setts in the tarmac. Follow this line for 20 metres to a high column at the end. Walk across the forecourt in the direction of 2 o’clock till you come to a solid concrete step with a high wall left and right. Go up the steps, following the right-hand edge. At the end of the steps, cross a flat area of just over 7 metres and then walk another 7 metres towards the main entrance at 11 o’clock. Be careful: there’s a sliding door.

- Return journey: Take tram number 6 to “Zürich, Bahnhofstrasse/Hauptbahnhof”. Tram stop Voltastrasse at the level of Gloriastrasse 45. Distance 70 metres. As you exit the sliding door, there is carpet flooring initially; then head in an 11 o’clock direction and tap till you touch a wall roughly 5 metres away. Follow the wall and stairs down – there are around 30 steps. At the end of the steps, continue in a 12 o’clock direction across the open forecourt for around 15 metres; there may be some parked cars. At the end of the forecourt, tap till you find a line of double setts raised about 2 centimetres. Follow this line in an 11 o’clock direction to the end of a wall. After just over 1.5 metres, tap to find the edge of the kerb and walk uphill to find the guidance area after 2 metres (tram 5 and 6).
- Destination: GLC building, Gloriastrasse 37/39, Zürich
- Starting point: For this building, do not get off at the tram stop “Zürich, ETH/Universit?tsspital”, but two stops later at “Zürich, Voltastrasse”, tram number 6 (and 5).
- Distance in metres: 80
- Directions: Continue in the direction of travel. Find the guidance area, then the lowered kerb on the left. Cross Gloriastrasse (tram and individual traffic). Make a 90 degree turn to the left and walk down Gloriastrasse for 20 metres. Tap to feel for a stone wall at 2 o’clock. The wall bends slightly left, then right. After 45 metres it makes a sharp bend to the right. From this bend, in the direction of 11 o’clock, the main entrance is just 3 metres away. Be careful: there’s a revolving door.

- Return journey: Take tram number 6 to “Zürich, Bahnhofstrasse/Hauptbahnhof”. Tram stop Voltastrasse at the level of Gloriastrasse 45. Distance 70 metres. Just a few steps after exiting the revolving door, feel for a wall on the left and slightly in front of you. Follow the wall, which heads in a 1 o’clock direction then has two bends in it. Follow the wall to the end and your position on the pavement will be at the rear end of the tram stop. Move down 15 metres to the guidance area for boarding the tram (tram 6 and 5).
- Destination: LEE building, Leonhardstrasse 21, Zurich
- Starting point: For this building, do not get off at the tram stop “Zürich, ETH/Universit?tsspital”, but one stop earlier at “Zürich, Haldenegg”, tram number 6 (and 10).
- Distance in metres: 125
- Directions: Get off the tram at the front, at the guidance area. Walk 2 metres uphill and cross Leonhardstrasse. Pedestrian crossing. Two vehicle lanes with tram tracks. Very wide pavement; follow Leonhardstrasse uphill, possibly on the left edge of the pavement, first along the garden wall, then along the line of setts (bicycles parked behind it). The main entrance is just over 100 metres on the right. There is a paved surface, roughly 2 by 8 metres, in front of the entrance. Before that, tarmac and a metal gutter.

- Return journey: Take tram number 6 to “Zürich, Bahnhofstrasse/Hauptbahnhof”. Tram stop Haldenegg at Leonhardstrasse 1. Distance 150 metres. On exiting the building, walk in a 12 o’clock direction; initially floor slabs then a gutter; then after about 3 metres tap for the edge of two setts and walk downhill. The raised edge of the setts marks the right edge of the broad pavement, and the kerb is about 3 metres further on the left. Tap along the raised edge of the setts and follow this line for 50 metres downhill. Be careful: there may be some parked cycles that protrude slightly over the edge of the setts. There is a garden wall at the end of the raised setts. Here, roughly another 3 metres further on the left; tap to find the curb of the road. Do not cross the road, but follow the pavement downhill for almost another 60 metres. Be careful: after 50 metres, there is a metal post in the way. Follow the curb until it becomes much higher. Here, at the far rear end of the tram stop, there is a guidance area at the front for boarding the tram.
- Destination: LFW Building, Universit?tsstrasse 2, Zurich
- Starting point: Tram stop “ETH/Universit?tsspital”, tram number 6 (and 9), at the level of the Main Building
- Distance in metres: 100
- Directions: Walk back in the opposite direction of travel, find the lowered kerb on the right, cross R?mistrasse (caution: first two tram tracks, then a central island, then a car lane). Turn 90 degrees to the left, walk along the footpath with a gentle incline. After 35 metres the entrance is on the right, with an iron gate. Can only be felt by tapping with a cane at half-height to the right (12 cm ledge). Climb four steps, paved forecourt, four steps to the big wooden doors.

- in the direction of the zoo, in R?mistrasse (downhill),
- in the direction of Irchel, in R?mistrasse (uphill),
- in the direction of the Main Station, in Tannenstrasse (downhill).

Distance 100 metres. Pavement on right, walk uphill 20 metres. Lowered kerb on the left, pedestrian crossing over Universit?tsstrasse. (Caution: first a car lane, then a central island, then two tram tracks, followed by an island with a guidance area, and another car lane). Ten metres to the left find the lowered kerb, take the pedestrian crossing over Tannenstrasse, heading in a 2 o’clock direction. Walk down the tram island to the guidance area for boarding the tram, on the left.
- Destination: ML Building, Tannenstrasse 3, Zurich
- Starting point: Tram stop “ETH/Universit?tsspital”, tram number 6 (and 9), at the level of the Main Building
- Distance in metres: 100
- Directions: Walk back in the opposite direction of travel. Find the lowered kerb on the left, cross R?mistrasse. Turn 90 degrees to the right, after 30 metres cross Tannenstrasse and walk to the left down Tannenstrasse. After 40 metres the entrance is in the corner of the building on the right.
- Special points: There are three tram stops in total at “ETH/Universit?tsspital”:
- in the direction of the zoo, in R?mistrasse (downhill),
- in the direction of Irchel, in R?mistrasse (uphill),
- in the direction of the Main Station, in Tannenstrasse (downhill).

- Return journey: Take tram number 6 to the main station “Zürich, Bahnhofstrasse/Hauptbahnhof”. Tram stop “ETH/Universit?tsspital” in Tannenstrasse, at the level of Tannenstrasse 5. Distance 50 metres. On exiting the building, immediately turn 90 degrees to the left, after 5 metres climb 6 steps, then, to the right, a tactile paving across the entire footpath. Cross Tannenstrasse to the tram island. Turn 90 degrees to the left, after 5 metres the guidance area for boarding the tram is on the right.
- Destination: MM building, Leonhardstrasse 34, Zurich
- Starting point: “ETH/Universit?tsspital” tram stop, tram number 6 (and 9), at the level of the Main Building
- Distance in metres: 250
- Directions: Walk back in the opposite direction of travel. Find the lowered kerb on the left, cross R?mistrasse. Turn 90 degrees to the right; after 30 metres make a 90-degree turn to the left, and follow Tannenstrasse for 110 metres downhill. Cross Leonhardstrasse. On the other side of the road, tap the low wall on the left and follow it, including a slight bend to the left, until the tarmac turns to a paved surface. Avoid slightly uphill route; instead, turn 90 degrees to the right and cross the road, approx. five metres. You will reach a wall and a handrail straight ahead. Follow the handrail down the steps, including a 90-degree turn to the left, and continue to follow the handrail to the end of the steps. At the end of the handrail is a large waste bin: circumvent it to the right. Entry to MM building via an automatic sliding door. Once inside the building, turn left down the stairs to the Mensa (level B); the Postomat, ETH Store and cafeteria are on your right (all on level C). The stairs to the sports facilities (Academic Sports Association Zurich, level A) are at the other end of level C.
- Special points: There is a barrier at some points along the handrail to prevent cycles from being chained to it. There are also a total of three “ETH/Universit?tsspital” tram stops:
- towards Zoo, downhill on R?mistrasse
- towards Irchel, uphill on R?mistrasse
- towards Hauptbahnhof (Main Station), downhill on Tannenstrasse

- Return journey: Take tram number 6 to the main station at “Zürich, Bahnhofstrasse/Hauptbahnhof”. “ETH/Universit?tsspital” tram stop on Tannenstrasse, at the level of Tannenstrasse 5. Exit the building, turn 90 degrees to the right, circumvent the large waste bin, immediately afterwards follow the handrail up the steps, including a 90-degree bend to the right. Continue to the end of the handrail. Cross the road at the border between the tarmac and paved surface, and tap the low wall straight ahead. Follow the wall to the left, including a slight bend to the right. At the end of the low wall, cross Leonhardstrasse. Gently climb Tannenstrasse until you reach the guidance area covering the entire width of the pavement after around 40 metres. Turn 90 degrees to the left, cross the entire width of Tannenstrasse. You will reach another large guidance area on the other side of the road: follow the guidelines on the right across Clausiusstrasse until you reach a third guidance area. Make a 90-degree turn to the right and cross Tannenstrasse again until you reach the tram island. Gently climb the tram island to the guidance area for boarding the tram on the right.
- Distance: 160 metres.
- Destination: NO building, Sonneggstrasse 5, Zurich
- Starting point: Tram stop “ETH/Universit?tsspital”, tram number 6 (and 9), at the level of the Main Building
- Distance in metres: 190
- Directions: Walk back in the opposite direction of travel. Find the lowered kerb on the left, cross R?mistrasse. Turn 90 degrees to the right, after 30 metres cross Tannenstrasse and follow the footpath for 100 metres, walking slightly uphill. At the destination: Tactile paving for guidance, across the entire footpath. Opening to the building forecourt is on the left, there is a stairway going up at 2 o’clock.
- Special points: There are sometimes many objects between the guidance area and the entrance stairway, including a permanently fixed, egg-shaped boulder around 80 cm in diameter and 1 m high. And: There are three tram stops in total at “ETH/Universit?tsspital”:
- in the direction of the zoo, in R?mistrasse (downhill),
- in the direction of Irchel, in R?mistrasse (uphill),
- in the direction of the Main Station, in Tannenstrasse (downhill).

Distance 150 metres. On exiting the building, turn 90 degrees to the right and follow the footpath to Tannenstrasse. Straight ahead there is a lowered kerb for the pedestrian crossing over Tannenstrasse, heading towards 2 o’clock. Walk down the tram island to the guidance area for boarding the tram, on the left.
Travelling to the ETH H?nggerberg campus by public transport (bus)
- To make things simple, the starting point for all directions to the H?nggerberg campus is the SBB railway station Zürich Oerlikon, which has excellent S-Bahn and intercity train connections. The following bus stop should be used at Zürich Oerlikon railway station: “Bahnhof Oerlikon Nord”, bus number 80.
- How to get to the stop “Bahnhof Oerlikon Nord”, bus number 80: The stop is at “Zürich Oerlikon (SBB)” station, alongside platform 8. Depending on which platform you arrive at, use the pedestrian underpass in the direction of Max-Frisch-Platz / Bus station “Bahnhof Oerlikon Nord” (address: Affolternstrasse 30, 8050 Zürich). After climbing the steps, turn 90 degrees to the right and walk 40 metres to the bus stop (double bus shelter). If you arrive on platform 8, you’re already on the right side.
- For all the directions provided, the destination stop for access to all buildings on the ETH H?nggerberg campus is the bus stop “Zürich, ETH H?nggerberg”.
- Destination: HCI Building, Vladimir-Prelog-Weg 1-5/10, Zurich. Entrance on the Wolfgang-Pauli-Strasse side.
- Starting point: Bus stop “ETH H?nggerberg”, bus number 80
- Distance in metres: 90
- Directions: Continue in the direction of travel. At the transition between the paved and tarmac surface (after about 80 metres) turn 90 degrees to the left to cross Wolfgang-Pauli-Strasse and then keep walking straight. Three marked steps and a ramp lead to the covered passage. 15 metres on the right: revolving doors, entrance HCI 100-199.
- Special points: On the left, street side, there are bollards every 1.5 metres spaced 1 metre from the roadway, plus a metal gutter along the side of the roadway. This can be used for guidance if necessary.
- Telephone info: +41 44 633 40 99
- Return journey: Take bus number 80 to “Zurich, Bahnhof Oerlikon Nord”. The bus stop is on the same side of the street as the HCI Building, no need to cross Wolfgang-Pauli-Strasse. After just over 90 metres follow the gravel path on the left which leads slightly uphill. After 100 metres there is a covered passage on the right. On the right is the entrance to the HCP building, ground floor. There is an automatic sliding door at the entrance, followed by a vestibule and then double doors.
- Special points: On the left, street side, there are bollards every 1.5 metres spaced 1 metre from the road, plus a metal rain gutter along each side of the road. This can be used for guidance if necessary.

Circumvent the wall to the left, follow the bend to the right after 25 metres and to the left again after eight metres along the border of the grassed area. Pedestrian crossing straight ahead, cross H?nggerbergring. Forecourt of Bellavista, approx. seven metres, then steps to the restaurant entrance.

High wall to the left of the steps, and on the right there is the wall of the building and a handrail. Steps are in three sections. Then continue along the covered passage for about 100m, and there is another flight of steps at 11 o’clock. There is a large waste bin above the steps; then carry on along the building for almost 10 metres to the end of the building. After another 10 metres or so, turn in the direction of 10 o’clock and walk about 40 metres across an open forecourt. Grassed areas to the left and right. From there, turn ninety degrees to the right, and after 4 metres walk down a long ramp. The ramp has a wall on both sides, so there is no risk of falling off. At the end of the ramp continue straight until you come to the wall of the building after a few metres, then make a ninety degree turn to the left, and another to the right after about 5 metres. Keep walking straight along the covered passage. Three marked steps and a ramp are at the end of the covered passage. The bus stop is on the same side of the street as the HCI building; no need to cross Wolfgang-Pauli-Strasse.
